B2Gold Otjikoto Mine recently hosted members of the Land Rehabilitation Society of Southern Africa (LaRSSA) as part of their regional technical tour aimed at promoting sustainable land use and environmental restoration. The visit marked a significant milestone in their ongoing commitment to responsible mining and environmental stewardship.
A key highlight of the visit was a guided tour of B2Gold’s active land rehabilitation sites. LaRSSA members observed various stages of ecological recovery, from early-stage revegetation to flourishing areas of restored native vegetation. These efforts reflect the mine’s science-based approach to land rehabilitation and its long-term dedication to restoring biodiversity as well as setting a high standard for post-mining landscapes in Southern Africa.
The delegation also gained insight into the mine’s integrated sustainability model, which extends beyond environmental efforts. A visit to the Ombili Clinic and Primary School, both established in partnership with the Namibian Government, underscored B2Gold Namibia’s investment in social development. These projects are part of the company’s broader vision to mine with purpose, ensuring that the positive impact of its operations supports health, education, and livelihoods in local communities.
Nansuunga Kambinda, a LaRSSA member and local representative of SLR Environmental Consulting (Africa and Middle East), shared her reflections on the visit:
“It was great to experience firsthand the work B2Gold is doing in progressive rehabilitation, nature conservation, energy efficiency, corporate social responsibility, and agriculture. This is a clear example of how mining can coexist with other activities in an environmentally conscious and sustainable way. The B2Gold team works in a space that encourages innovation—learning from challenges, and fine-tuning outcomes for effective implementation at mine closure. The investments being made now are already yielding results and deserve to be emulated.”
B2Gold Namibia extends heartfelt thanks to the LaRSSA delegation and council members for their visit. Collaborations like these not only strengthen the network of land rehabilitation professionals in the region but also reinforce a shared vision for a sustainable, inclusive future for mining in Southern Africa.
