The Chamber of Mines of Namibia joins the nation in mourning the passing of our founding father, Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma on the 8th February, 2025 at the age of 95. His life was a testament to unwavering dedication, resilience, and visionary leadership. As the first President of Namibia, Dr. Nujoma’s tireless efforts and sacrifices laid the foundation for the independence and development of our beloved nation.
Dr. Nujoma’s commitment to the liberation struggle and his profound impact on Namibia’s journey to freedom will forever be etched in our history. His leadership extended beyond the political realm, fostering unity and reconciliation among Namibians. His vision for a strong, united, and progressive Namibia continues to inspire us all.
The Chamber of Mines acknowledges Dr. Nujoma’s significant contributions to the mining sector, which has been the cornerstone of Namibia’s economy. His policies and initiatives have paved the way for sustainable development and growth within the industry, benefiting countless Namibians. He believed that education was the greatest equaliser and in order to encourage the youth to study, he pursued his Masters degree in Geology from the University of Namibia in 2005 at the age of 76. He proved the point that one is never too old to go back to school.
This action inspired many Namibian youths to pursue studies in mining related fields. He saw the youth as the future of the nation and by educating and equipping them with the relevant technical skills, knowledge, cultural norms and values, this will allow them to play a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of the country. His vision of the economic emancipation was anchored in the sustainable development of minerals and other natural resources, particularly in value addition to realise optimum benefits to the Namibian economy.
As we remember Dr. Nujoma, we celebrate his legacy and the values he championed—patriotism, unity, and democracy. We are committed to carrying forward his vision and building upon the foundation he laid for a prosperous Namibia.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
