Diamonds Beyond the Ocean: Debmarine Namibia’s Sporting Legacy

Debmarine Namibia is well known for its vessels that recover diamonds from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Yet, its true pride lies not only in the treasures they bring to shore, but in the lives they uplift and the communities they empower. Beyond industrial strength, Debmarine has steadily built a reputation as one of Namibia’s most influential patrons of sport. From netball courts to football stadiums, their sponsorships have revived competitions, reshaped livelihoods, and strengthened national pride.

This is the journey of a marine diamond mining company that has become a cornerstone of Namibian sport.

The Netball Revolution: 2017–Present

In 2017, Namibian netball stood at a crossroads. The sport, loved by many young women across the country, was struggling with limited resources, poor visibility, and declining participation. Debmarine stepped in with a N$1.8 million sponsorship spread over three years, a lifeline that transformed the game.

Their support extended to the Senior National Championships, the Netball Pent Series (a five-nation tournament), and regional leagues, while they were also established as the official sponsor of the national netball team, the Debmarine Desert Jewels. In addition, they financed umpire training and facilitated the launch of Netball Namibia’s first official website. These initiatives went far beyond logistical improvements; they were symbolic investments that restored dignity to the sport and reaffirmed its place in the national landscape.

“For many young girls, netball became a pathway to empowerment. Debmarine Namibia’s sponsorship was truly a game-changer, not just for netball, but for the broader narrative of women in sport,” said former Netball General Secretary Imelda Nerongo.

“Debmarine Namibia was the catalyst for mass participation in netball. To put it simply, there was no netball, and what Debmarine Namibia has done and continues to do in the Namibian netball sphere is highly appreciated. It sends a clear message: diamonds shine brightest when invested in people.”

Desert Jewels went on to win the Six Nations Cup in Singapore in 2019, and then the inaugural 2025 UAE Netball Cup in Dubai, defeating Singapore in the final to claim their first major international title.

These achievements showcase a national team in motion, creating a pathway to World Cup qualifiers. The team ranked outside the world’s top 30 in 2017 and today occupies 18th position, a clear testament that this investment is not only rewarding players, but has placed Namibia as a competitive rival in the international netball scene.

Football’s Lifeline: 2022

If netball was about empowerment, football was about survival. By 2022, Namibian football had endured years of inactivity due to administrative disputes within the Namibia Football Association (NFA). Stadiums were silent, players were idle, and communities that thrived on match-day economies were left in limbo.

Debmarine reignited hope with a N$13 million sponsorship to revive the premier league. The package included N$8 million in start-up grants for clubs and N$2.58 million in prize money.

The impact was immediate. Stadiums buzzed again, vendors returned to sell food and merchandise, and players regained livelihoods. For small businesses around football venues, the sponsorship was more than sport—it was economic recovery.

Debmarine’s intervention was widely celebrated as an act of nation-building. It demonstrated that sport is not a luxury but a vital social fabric, capable of sustaining jobs, fostering unity, and inspiring dreams.

Raising the Bar: 2024–2025

By 2024, Debmarine had firmly established itself as a trusted partner in Namibian sport. Their vision went beyond simply funding competitions; they sought to help professionalise them and ensure their long-term sustainability.

In 2024, the company proudly announced an N$18 million sponsorship for the 2024/25 football season, designed to strengthen the league and elevate standards.

Far from being restrictive, this approach was embraced by many as a progressive step toward transparency and professionalism. To Debmarine, the message was clear: sponsorship should not only sustain sport but also raise it to international benchmarks.

This pledge marked the beginning of a new era, one where corporate partnerships drive excellence, ensuring that every investment contributes to sustainable success and positions Namibian football as a competitive force on the global stage.

Beyond Sponsorship: Our Vision for Community

Debmarine’s contribution to national sport is not just about money. It is about vision. Each sponsorship reflects the company’s broader philosophy: that sport is a tool for empowerment, discipline, and national pride.

  • The netball sponsorship empowered the girl-child, reducing social risks and nurturing future leaders.
  • Football sponsorships revived livelihoods, restored community economies, and reignited national unity.
  • Debmarine’s conditional pledges emphasised accountability, pushing Namibian sport toward professionalism.

In every case, the company positioned itself not merely as a sponsor but as a partner in nation-building.

The Ripple Effect

“The ripple effects of our sponsorships extend far beyond the courts and stadiums. Vendors selling food outside stadiums, taxi drivers ferrying fans, and small businesses producing team merchandise all benefit. Families find joy in weekend matches, children dream of becoming athletes, and communities rediscover pride in local heroes. Sport, in this sense, becomes a diamond itself—precious, enduring, and capable of transforming lives.”

– Willy Mertens, CEO, Debmarine Namibia

Debmarine’s sponsorship journey through sport is a testament to the power of corporate responsibility. From netball courts to football stadiums, they have consistently invested in the future of Namibian youth, communities, and national pride.

The story is far from over. As governance structures evolve and professionalism takes root, Debmarine’s role will continue to shape the trajectory of Namibian sport. The diamonds recovered from the ocean are not just symbols of wealth; they are catalysts for empowerment, unity, and dreams.

In the end, their greatest legacy may not be the diamonds extracted, but the lives uplifted through sport.
